PTA's Role in the Federal Legislative
Process |
There are many points during the federal
legislative, regulatory, and judicial processes at which local and state PTAs and the
National PTA can have influence. For example, if there is an issue that a PTA or group of
PTAs feels strongly about, the members can organize a petition drive and letter writing
campaign directed to the representatives for their congressional districts and their
senators to get one or more of these legislators to introduce a bill in Congress.
Alternatively, PTA members can express their support or objections to a bill already
introduced as it makes its way through Congress by contacting their legislators who serve
on pertinent subcommittees and committees; by requesting to appear as witnesses or submit
written testimony at hearings; and by urging passage or defeat when a bill is before the
whole Congress for a final vote. Members may also contact the president to sign or veto a
bill. |
